Drivers are required to complete and pass a DOT MEDICAL EXAM if they operate a motor vehicle for interstate commerce with a gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight rating, or gross combination weight of over 10,000 lbs. or operate a motor vehicle designed to carry more than 15 people.

The new rule states that, in order to issue a DOT medical certificate, a medical professional must be either a doctor of medicine, doctor of osteopathy, doctor of chiropractic, physician assistant, advanced practice nurse, or any other medical professional authorized by the particular state's law to perform physical.

Drivers of the following vehicles in interstate commerce need to have a DOT medical exam: vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or gross combination weight (GCW) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds or more.

What is examined during the physical?

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart, lung, and abdominal sounds
  • Urine sample
  • Eye and hearing test
  • Physical of spine and body

What you need to bring for the physical:

  • Glasses, contacts, or hearing aid if worn
  • Driver’s license
  • Prior medical notes if applicable
  • Recent eye exam or hearing test results if applicable

A DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months. The medical examiner may also issue a medical examiner's certificate for less than 24 months when it is desirable to monitor a condition, such as high blood pressure.
